Optometric Assistant

As one of the largest optometry practices in Thunder Bay, our team of 10 doctors serves patients across two modern clinic locations equipped with the latest diagnostic technology.
We are currently seeking a full-time Optometric Assistant to join our growing team. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working with people, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and wants to be involved in both the administrative and clinical aspects of patient care.
About the Role
As an Optometric Assistant, you will play a vital role in ensuring a seamless patient experience from start to finish. You will support the overall flow of the clinic by assisting with reception, administration, patient coordination, and pre-testing responsibilities.
The successful candidate will be comfortable adapting throughout the day and helping wherever needed to support patients, doctors, and fellow team members. Occasional travel between our two clinic locations may be required, with the offices located approximately 12 minutes apart.
Key Responsibilities
Patient Care & Clinic Flow
- Welcome patients and provide an exceptional first impression of the clinic
- Guide patients through their appointments and ensure a smooth clinic experience
- Assist in maintaining efficient patient flow throughout the day
- Support doctors and clinical staff with patient preparation and coordination
Pre-Testing & Clinical Support
- Perform pre-testing and preliminary diagnostic procedures as trained
- Prepare patients for examinations and testing
- Maintain testing areas and equipment
- Ensure accurate documentation and communication of patient information
Reception & Administration
- Answer incoming phone calls and respond to patient inquiries
- Schedule and confirm appointments
- Process insurance claims and direct billing
- Update and maintain patient records
- Assist with general administrative and clerical tasks
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- Ability to multitask in a busy environment
- Experience in an optometry, ophthalmology, medical, or healthcare setting, scheduling, patient records, or insurance billing is preferred but not required
