A little about us
Our mission is to provide customized solutions to every day visual challenges to enhance each patient’s life. We strive to achieve this by developing a working relationship with each patient in a caring comfortable environment. Our eye doctors and staff are committed to learn and to teach so that our patients can be better informed about all aspects of their vision and preventative care. We an award winning practice https://www.reviewofoptometry.com/CMSDocuments/2012/12/ro1212i.pdf (page 32-33) and are one of the few truly full scope practices in North America. Our patient experience begins with a warm welcome from our Director of First Impressions, and is led to the first Initial Diagnostics room, where lensometry, AR/AK, refraction, and tonometry are performed. In Initial Diagnostics 2, there is FDT, Annidis Multi-Spectal imaging, while the Optometric Assistant enters pre-completed history forms into our Electronic Medical Records System, Visual Eyes. In Initial Diagnostics 3, Red-Green Optomap, Autofluorescence, and OCT is performed on Optos Monaco. In the exam room, VA, colour vision, and stereo are performed. This allows the OD function at the highest level as all of the technical work is delegated. After being paged, the OD comes in, makes small talk, reviews history, imaging, and refraction, then gets to consider how to best help the patient. Since we use Optometric Assistants who also function as scribes, time is spent on demonstrations and counselling rather on technical work and typing. Rendia communication software is employed to enhance the experience. An Eyewear consultant is paged to review recommendations. A Vision Therapist is paged if further evaluation is required for accommodative, binocular, learning, or traumatic brain injury disorders as we have a Vision Therapy Service. iVue OCT and Humphrey Visual Field Analyzer appointments are scheduled if the patient needs a Glaucoma Workup. iPen and IM900 imaging on Haag-Streit slit lamps are available if the patient needs a Dry Eye Workup. Medmont Topography is available for specialty CL fitting. Genetic Testing is available for Intermediate AMD patients. Referrals for Low Vision Evaluation come to us from all over North America and Europe. The Urgent Care Clinic and the West Coast General Hospital’s Emergency Department refer to us daily. A visiting Ophthalmologist from Nanaimo sees patients here throughout the year. Valley Vision Optometry is also a teaching clinic with students rotating through from the University of Waterloo and Pacific University College of Optometry.
A little about Port Alberni
Port Alberni is a desirable location in the mid-Vancouver Island Region. We are a 2 hour drive to surfing on the West Coast, 1.5 hours to beachcombing on the East Coast, 1.5 hours to skiing/snowboarding north at Mount Washington, and 45 minutes to the float plane terminal in Nanaimo to hop over to Vancouver or Seattle.
We often think of ourselves as a “best kept secret”. Housing is affordable (median house price is $244,900: https://www.canadianrealestatemagazine.ca/top-neighbourhoods/port-alberni-bc-10421.aspx) and we have access to all the amenities that nature enthusiasts are looking for. Whatever your outdoor passion is, you can fulfil it here: surfing, kiteboarding, canoeing, kayaking, hiking, mountain biking, swimming. Our weather is pretty fantastic too. Although, like Vancouver, we are known for our gray and wet winters, we can also boast our lack of snow in winter and our gloriously hot summer in July and August. Overall, our climate can’t be beat and we’re often the envy of our neighbouring provinces.
A little about our Team
We currently have 10 support staff. In addition to clinical duties, the entire team is involved in open-book management of the practice’s finances. We call it the Great Game of Optometry. Every Tuesday, the team re-casts the financials of the practices so we can see if we are on track or not, then adjust accordingly. Our team is like family – we support each other professionally, but also personally too as everyone goes through the ups and downs of life. We all look forward to our Team BBQ every August at Sproat Lake and our Christmas Party in December. We have over 100 years of experience among our team members which allows our Doctors to focus on their duties and our team to support them.
A little about Dr. Golemba
Dr. Golemba grew up in Saskatchewan, living mostly in Regina, but spent Grade 7 to 12 and graduated in the tiny Town of Ituna. He studied for three years at the University of Regina in a double degree program in Biology / Biochemistry before getting into Optometry School at the University of Waterloo. Much of his interest in skill in dealing with Ocular Disease came from his Externship at the Houston Eye Associates in Texas. After convocation in 2001, Dr. Golemba joined a private practice in Victoria. He had the opportunity to locum at practices in Smithers, Prince George, and Cranbrook, and also was partner in a startup practice in Victoria. Although he really enjoyed the city life in Victoria, it was expensive to live there, expensive to operate a practice, and there is an over-saturation of eye care practitioners. Furthermore, his wife, a teacher, could not find employment there. Out of the blue came a phone call from an Optometrist in the small city of Port Alberni, Roland Stickle, who had opened a practice cold in 1960 and really wanted to retire. Dr. Golemba and his wife, Shannon, decided to take a day trip up to Port Alberni during Christmas holidays. They couldn’t believe what they saw: the size of the practice was 3x the size of his Victoria practice, they could buy a house with 2 ½ x the square footage of their condo in Victoria for less money, and the scenery was breathtaking. To top things off, the school district offered Shannon a job on the spot! Moving to Port Alberni has given them the lifestyle they sought – Shannon now has a permanent position with the School District, they have two children and two pugs, and they have travelled all over the world. Dr. Golemba cycles to work, coaches Soccer, plays on a Hockey team, and rides 2 motorcycles. The family snowboards in the winter and spends time at Sproat Lake and Tofino in the summer. Dr. Golemba is looking for a fellow OD who shares his passion for patient care and would want this lifestyle!
