Spring Clean Your Eyecare Business

By Trudi Charest, RO

It’s spring and that always indicates the signs of new life and freshness.

It also gives me the immediate urge to spring clean. It’s a time to get organized, get rid of the old and bring in the new as well as make everything shiny and smelling like lemons. If you think this only applies to your house…think again. Your eyecare business can likely use a spring cleaning even more.

Spring cleaning doesn’t have to be the massive job you are imaging… with a little planning, preparation and team involvement it can be done in one day and make a huge difference in your office curb appeal.

Here are some tips to get started:

Annual Clean Up

Choose a day and mark it in the schedule. You don’t have a close for the day but choose a day that is usually lighter with patients and ensure everyone understands that customer service comes first, cleaning second.  Once it is scheduled stick to it so everyone knows it is part of their work day.

Create a Cleaning Checklist

Don’t assume the team will just jump in and start cleaning to the degree you want it done.  Make it clear what your expectations are of the type of cleaning that is to be completed and put it in writing.  If you want something done right you need to tell them what to do.

Divide and Conquer

Delegate cleaning assignments to each office individual regardless of position or role.  This is a team event and the more you involve the entire team the more likely they will keep it clean and organized later.  Clean as a team!

Empower Decluttering

Give free reign to the team to declutter, organize and purge the office of old promotional material, junk, broken office equipment and supplies so that along with cleaning comes organization.  Start a list of items that need to be replaced and restocked.

Add Something New

Bring spring inside the office by adding some fresh flowers or buy some new art for the waiting room.  Don’t forget about how the office smells. Invest in an aromatherapy diffuser or scented room sprays that captures the freshness and warmth of the season.
